Trips to Ljubljana

The capital of Slovenia is just like the rest of the country—perfectly sized, very charming, and filled with friendly people.

Charm, Baroque, and Art Nouveau

The most charming part of the city is the picturesque old town, nestled between the river and the castle hill. Here, winding streets connect beautiful buildings and open squares. A fifteen-minute walk will take you up to the castle, offering a fantastic view over the city and the mountains in the background. Ljubljana is home to numerous small galleries and museums. Art enthusiasts should not miss the National Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art, conveniently located just a stone's throw from each other. From there, you can stroll into the beautiful Tivoli Park, which gradually transitions into a fantastic walking area.

With a population of less than half a million, the city is easy to explore on foot. A simple and carefree way to get acquainted with the city is to follow the marked paths in the center, guiding you between various attractions at your own pace.

Shopping Delight and Evening Fun

Slovenians love to shop. They enjoy small, chic boutiques in the old town, large shopping centers, and, of course, markets. The selection is vast and varied, offering a mix of local and imported goods. You will find clothing, leather goods, and Slovenian crystal at reasonable prices. The euro has been the currency since January 2008.

Ljubljana is a university town, which is reflected in the diverse and lively evening activities. Late nights at cafés and pubs, combined with concerts or theater visits, are common. Additionally, a trendy mix of nightclubs and discos is available. In the summertime, aim to catch outdoor performances at Krizanke, where you can enjoy classical music, jazz, big band, as well as ballet and theater in a delightful monastery setting.

The Culinary Capital

Slovenians refer to their restaurants as "gostilna," and most Slovenians are discerning food lovers, well-acquainted with seasonal specialties. They enjoy large portions and hearty, robust meals. Hearty soups, delicious cold cuts, potatoes, and an abundance of meat and vegetables characterize Slovenian cuisine. However, a lighter wave of dining has arrived, and surprisingly many Slovenians are content with a light salad for lunch. Ljubljana now boasts a variety of ethnic restaurants, fast food, and street stalls, adding to the image of a food-loving capital. If you visit the picturesque Bled for golf, hiking, or simply to enjoy nature, be sure to try a "kremschnita," a delicious calorie-laden dessert with local origins.

Rent a Car and Explore

Ljubljana is centrally located, roughly in the middle of the country. Distances are short, and you can see a lot in one day. In just over an hour, you can be down by the coast, and the nearest ski slope is only a half-hour away. Several modern spa resorts with 38-degree thermal water are just a short drive away, adding to the appeal. The motorway network is well-developed. Trains and buses also offer easy travel options. Popular day trips include Lipica (golf and horses), Postojna (famous caves), and the charming coastal village of Piran on the Adriatic Sea.
